Handbuilt Pottery

Luz Angela Crawford

As a native of Colombia, South America I was inspired to create a style of pots and clay plaques in the style of the indigenous culture. The process to make pottery is very old. Each piece I make is molded by hand using primitive techniques. I incorporate natural elements such as seeds, rocks, wood leaves and shells to make the textures in each piece I create. Using earthly colors and textures, with attention to detail, I mold nature in a unique way. After working many hours each piece is allowed to dry before being fired. Glazes are then applied to the services using minerals such as copper, iron, cobalt, and various types of clay giving the art an organic finish.

I had the wonderful opportunity with the indigenous Guambia culture from my country Colombia, South America. The Guambians live in the central northern Andes and are known for their potter and weaving. I discovered their primitive traditions and techniques of working with clay without the use of a potters wheel. They showed me how to connect with my roots and the Earth. At this time I was even more inspired to be a part of the long history of people making things with their hands. My work reflects the ancient artistic traditions from South America. When creating a piece of clay, I am into it. Making pottery is pure joy.

Artist’s statement

Early in my childhood my Uncle gave me tubes of  watercolor, a paintbrush, and several photos of canyons. I discovered I wanted to paint then; however, it was much later before I had the opportunity to do art.  I paint realism and abstract works, though I am basically considered an imaginary artist.  For me, art expresses how I feel about the world, its past, present and future. Life experiences provide me with so many ideas that I must force myself to be selective and work in a specific area of interest to create a group of works.

All my life I observed beauty and life itself in patterns and images within clouds, the landscape, flowers, and day to day scenes. It is an exciting time in my life to paint: so I chose these works to express my inner self – a native Texan.
